But gem trading was not the only thing that interested Jimmie. He had also formed a theory that King Solomon's mines were somewhere around there and that he should try to find them. “They were after gold of course,” he said, “and there should be plenty around here.” Then this American chappie who was a geologist showed up on a holiday with his wife and Jimmie cornered him. “He's a real geologist,” Jimmie said to me as we were enjoying a few gin pahits on his magnificent verandah — that looked directly on Mt. Kilimanjaro a few miles off.

“Is that so?” I commented.

“Yes, he's from the Salt Lake School of Mines and what he doesn't know about geology isn't worth knowing. And he's on sabbatical for six months to study geology here in Tanzania.”

“Oh, jolly good,” I said. “I'm sure if he's from Salt Lake we'll all get enlightened.”

“Certainly it is likely,” Jimmie continued, “and I've persuaded him to go and look at an area in the Masai lands where I believe King Solomon's mine was located. No one ever goes there — except Masai of course… Lion country you know.”

“I know the Masai run after them and spear them by hand,” I said. “A half Masai chappie told me that. Lions should keep away from there.”

“Oh, they don't do that any more. Lions are protected now. But that's where were going… and I need you too, Ponsenby.”

I had a feeling of misgiving about that so I said, “Why do you need me?”

“To take care of his wife while we go prospecting. He doesn't want her holding us up. You can take her on a walk or something… collect wild flowers or whatever.” And so the matter was sealed.
